P. R. Sreejesh is an Indian professional field hockey player who is widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation. A former captain of the Indian senior national team, he won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, the 2011 Ordos City Asian Champions Trophy, the 2016 Kuantan Asian Champions Trophy, the 2018 Muscat Asian Champions Trophy, and the 2008 Hyderabad Junior Asia Cup. He had clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2016 London Champions Trophy, the 2018 Breda Champions Trophy, the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, the 2013 Ipoh Asia Cup, and the 2012 Doha Asian Champions Trophy. Sreejesh had also secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (played in July and August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, and the 2014–15 Raipur Hockey World League. For his services to field hockey, the Government of India honored him with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (the highest sporting honor in India) in 2021; the Padma Shri (the 4th-highest civilian honor of India) in 2017, and the Arjuna Award (the 2nd-highest sporting honor in India) in 2015.

P. R. Sreejesh completed his primary education at St. Antony’s Lower Primary School in Kizhakkambalam, an eastern suburb of the city of Kochi. Therafter, he briefly attended St. Joseph’s High School, also in Kizhakkambalam.

When he was about 12 years old, he joined the GV Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Kerala. After his high school graduation, he joined Sree Narayana College in the Kollam district of Kerala. He graduated from there with a degree in history.

  • It was only after he joined the GV Raja Sports School at the age of 12 that a sports coach there suggested he take up goalkeeping in field hockey.
  • Sreejesh was awarded the ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ award following India’s title triumph at the 2008 Hyderabad Junior Asia Cup.
  • In the final of the 2011 Ordos City Asian Champions Trophy, against arch-rivals Pakistan, he produced a title-winning performance by saving 2 penalty strokes.
  • He then won the ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ award at the 2013 Ipoh Asia Cup; a feat that he repeated at the 2014 Bhubaneswar Champions Trophy as well as the 2018 Breda Champions Trophy.
  • In the final of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, against arch-rivals Pakistan, he produced a title-winning performance by saving 2 penalty strokes, a performance that mirrored his heroics in the final of the 2011 Ordos City Asian Champions Trophy.
  • For his performances in 2020 and 2021, he was honored with the ‘Male Goalkeeper of the Year’ award by FIH (Fédération Internationale de Hockey). He became the 1st Indian player to have earned this honor.
  • In January 2022, he won the ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award, becoming just the 2nd Indian to achieve this honor after fellow hockey legend Rani Rampal in 2020. The award is presented by International World Games Association, an organization that conducts The World Games, an international multi-sport event (usually held every 4 years, one year after the Summer Olympics) comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games.
