Graham, born on July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina, grew up in a family of modest means. His parents ran a liquor store and pool hall in a small town located in the northwestern part of the state.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of South Carolina in 1977 and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1981.
Following law school, Graham joined the United States Air Force and served as a judge advocate from 1982 to 1988. He then joined the South Carolina Air National Guard, where he served until 1995, reaching the rank of colonel.
In 1994, Graham ran for the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina’s 3rd congressional district and won the election. He served in the House from 1995 to 2003. In 2002, he ran for the United States Senate and won, beginning his tenure in that chamber in 2003. Graham has since been re-elected three times, most recently in 2020.
