The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released its list of nominees for the upcoming Golden Globes. And, in the Best Director category, they failed to nominate a woman despite 2019 having some amazing films from female directors. Honey Boy director Alma Har’el immediately took to Twitter to voice her opinion about the lack of female nominees.
“Good morning to everyone that’s writing me about the #goldenglobes,” Har’el wrote. “I feel you but know this. I was on the inside for the first time this year. These are not our people and they do not represent us. Do not look for justice in the awards system.”

She continued by telling her fans to keep fighting for more women and people of color and support them by going to see their films, and she warned against making their “end game the political money that trades hands in the form of movie campaigns for people who can’t see us and recognize us.”
The list of nominees for the Best Director category are: Boon Joon-ho (Parasite), Sam Mendes (1917), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Todd Phillips (Joker).
Har’el pointed out that many female-directed movies received critical acclaim this year, like Marielle Heller who directed A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Also, Greta Gerwig directed Little Women, Olivia Wilde was in the director’s chair for Booksmart, and Lorena Scafaria directed Hustlers.
The first time the HFPA recognized a female director with a nomination was in 1983 when Barbra Streisand got a nod for Yentl. She actually took home the trophy that year, and received a second nomination in 1991 for The Prince of Tides.

The other female directors who have received a Golden Globe nomination are Jane Campion for The Piano, Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and Ava DuVernay for Selma. Streisand is still the only woman who has actually won a Golden Globe for Best Director.

Honey Boy is the semi-autobiographical drama that Shia LaBeouf wrote and starred in, and it is now playing in theaters. The 77th Annual Golden Globes will air on Sunday, January 5th on NBC.
