The first four weeks of the X-Files were consistently so high in the ratings that it was among the top four broadcast shows for the entire week, every week. People love the X-Files so much that the premiere was the second highest ranked show that week, only behind the NFC Championship in viewership. The X-Files is a huge hit and while there may be barriers to renewing the show, public interest is not one of them, nor would I assume money will be. Fox should continue throwing money at this incredible show because it’s surely bringing in advertising dollars. As for whether it’s feasible for the X-Files to continue, David Duchovny says he’s on board if it happens, and that everyone else is too.
On if they would do more
When we were together doing the show this time it just felt like the old show. I think we’re all open to it [doing more]. It’s just a matter of getting everbody’s schedules to jibe. Gillian lives in London, I don’t know where I live. Chris loves here. I would love to I think we all would.
Although outlets are running with the “we would all love to” angle, he did qualify it. This is very similar to what Duchovny said to Variety. He basically said that they’re so busy they have to wait and see. “Gillian and I have talked about [it], and then we just stop because we get to 2023 and we still haven’t found a date we can do it.” I hope that’s not true, especially after seeing the final episode last night.
Spoilers for previously aired episodes of X-Files
I was so impressed with the final episode of X-Files in this 6 episode arc. It was a perfect mix of conspiracy with a dash of science and real-life plausibility to make it go down. Plus they deliberately left the ending up in the air for follow up. (My only complaint is that Lauren Ambrose is miscast and overacting. She is not subtle enough to play a foil to Scully.) Please let there be more X-Files. This revival more than lived up to the original quality of storytelling and so many people are watching.
X-Files creator Chris Carter has all but promised that the show will wrap up that cliffhanger – sometime. He told The NY Times “I can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back… I don’t know how or when — Fox owns the show. But because the ratings were what they were, I think the show will come back one way or the other.” He also said that he spoke with Fox executives following the final episode so it sounds like there’s more in the works. There’s still the issue of actor availability, however it sounds like they’re going to figure it out. Yes!
